Frequently asked questions and answers:
- Speaker fabric from Akustikstoff.com is easy to sew.
It can be processed without difficulty using a standard sewing machine, a strong needle and high-quality polyester thread.
The fabric is dimensionally stable, flexible, and tear-resistant, making it easy to achieve clean seams for hems, joins, or creative applications.
If several fabric panels are to be sewn together to increase the overall width, we recommend having this done by a professional workshop or tailor. This ensures that the seams run straight and the material remains evenly and properly tensioned. That depends on the material you want to bond the speaker cloth to.
The speaker cloth from Akustikstoff.com is made of polyester, so the adhesive used should bond well both to polyester and to the chosen surface.
In many cases, spray adhesive is a good, easy-to-use solution and has been tested successfully by us. Hot glue has also proven effective, especially for small or fiddly fixing tasks.
However, caution is required with Akustikstoff 2.0: due to the fabric’s special water-repellent finish, adhesive bonds are often not particularly strong. In this case, it is better to staple the fabric or fix it using our hook fastener tape..
Our tip: always test the adhesive on a small sample piece first and practise working with the glue and the fabric. This ensures smooth mounting and prevents damage to the material.
Further detailed information on professional mounting methods for our speaker cloths can be found in this blog article.- In principle, any knitted fabric can develop a run if handled improperly.
However, the speaker cloth from Akustikstoff.com is extremely robust, and under normal use or during installation – including stapling – this does not happen. Runs can only occur if significant force is applied by pulling or stretching the cut edge.
With normal handling, the fabric remains stable and keeps its shape. - Speaker cloth from Akustikstoff.com is ideally suited for staple-gun fastening, as it is dimensionally stable, flexible and tear-resistant.
However, make sure not to place the staples too close to the fabric edge. This ensures even tension and allows the staples to hold the speaker cloth securely. For a particularly clean result, we recommend stretching the cloth evenly and spacing the staples at intervals of around 3–5 cm.
You can find further, very detailed information on professional fastening of our speaker cloths in this blog article. - The easiest way to mount speaker cloth from Akustikstoff.com is by using the special hook-fastener tape available in our shop.
The Velcro tape itself features small hooks and is self-adhesive on the substrate. For additional stability, it can optionally be secured with staples. The specially shaped hooks penetrate the mesh structure of the speaker cloth and hold it securely in place. This allows the fabric to be tensioned evenly, removed easily if required, and repositioned or retightened at any time.
Thanks to the unique hook design of our hook-fastener tape, which is clearly different from standard hardware-store "Velcro," this works without damaging the speaker cloth.
Mounting speaker cloth with hook-fastener tape is particularly practical if the fabric needs to be removable, for example for occasional washing or to allow easy access to the interior of a loudspeaker enclosure.
Further detailed information on professional fixing methods for our speaker cloths can be found in this blog article. - Speaker cloth from Akustikstoff.com is highly elastic and stretchable. It has been specifically developed to be stretched tightly without warping or losing its shape.
The elasticity of the acoustic cloth makes it easy to compensate for minor irregularities during installation and helps avoid wrinkles. At the same time, it ensures that the fabric remains dimensionally stable over time. This makes it ideal for use on complex frame shapes, speaker fronts and wall coverings. In principle, both sides of the speaker cloth from Akustikstoff.com can be used as the visible side. The speaker cloth is evenly dyed and has the same structure on both sides. The only exception is printed speaker cloth, where the front side is clearly visible anyway.
From an acoustic point of view, it makes no difference which side faces outwards. However, we recommend using the more textured side as the front. It appears more uniform, diffuses light slightly better and provides a particularly even visual appearance, especially under direct lighting.
Further detailed information is available in this blog article.- In principle, yes – and in some situations, layering can even be useful to improve visual opacity. The good news is: speaker cloth from Akustikstoff.com can be used in multiple layers without any significant loss in acoustic performance. Sound transparency is only reduced very slightly, to an extent that is hardly noticeable in everyday use and negligible in most applications.
However, before installing the fabric in multiple layers, we recommend testing whether the result meets your requirements:- Check the visual appearance (keyword: moiré effect), especially with regard to lighting conditions and colour. You can find further information on visual opacity in this blog article.
- If the fabric will be used in front of devices controlled by infrared remote controls, test whether the IR signal still passes through reliably when several layers are used. You’ll find detailed information on infrared transparency here.
- Whether you can print on the speaker cloth yourself depends on the equipment you have available and your experience. In general, our speaker cloths cannot be printed or dyed like conventional fabrics such as cotton.
As a knitted polyester fabric, it requires specialised techniques to achieve satisfactory results – and the special acoustic properties and intended uses of our cloths exclude some of these techniques outright. For example, screen printing or pad printing carries a high risk of affecting the open-pore structure of the fabric and thus its acoustic properties. For the same reason, foiling and flocking methods are also unsuitable. Transfer printing does not compromise acoustic transparency, but it only produces relatively muted colours.
The method of choice is thermodirect printing, a novel and complex process that delivers outstanding results but requires specialised equipment that only a few have access to. Akustikstoff.com offers this method: in our shop, you can order printed speaker cloth produced with thermodirect printing, tailored specifically for you.
If you want a reliable, high-quality result, it’s best to avoid DIY experiments and rely on our professionally printed speaker cloth directly. - Painting our speaker cloth is technically possible, but not recommended. Paints and varnishes that adhere sufficiently to the fabric can seal the fine mesh, preventing sound from passing through freely. If you want a customised design, we recommend having the cloth professionally printed using thermodirect printing with your own image – this ensures it remains acoustically transparent and retains its sound properties.
In this FAQ section, you’ll find answers to topics such as acoustic transparency, infrared signal transmission, visual opacity, and ultrasound behaviour.
Learn how the fabric performs when used in front of loudspeakers, absorbers, sensors, or remote-control receivers, and how to use it effectively in your project.
Frequently asked questions and answers:
- The lighter the fabric colour and the stronger the light from the front or back, the more visibly the background may show through.
Darker colours are more opaque than lighter ones, and increasing the distance to the background helps reduce visible shine-through.
The degree of tension also plays a role: if the fabric is stretched very tightly, the mesh opens slightly, increasing visual transparency.
If you need maximum opacity, you can also install the fabric in two layers – with an extremely small impact on acoustic performance. However, be mindful during installation to avoid Moiré effects.
You can find further information on the opacity of speaker fabric in this blog article. - Yes, in most cases infrared remote controls work without problems through the acoustic fabric from Akustikstoff.com.
The fabric is sufficiently infrared-transparent, so IR signals from remote controls reliably pass through.
Only with multiple layers or a steep angle between transmitter and receiver may the range slightly decrease.
If you want to be completely certain, simply test the remote control briefly before final installation – this ensures your setup works perfectly. - The acoustic fabric from Akustikstoff.com is designed so that sound waves pass through almost unhindered. It is acoustically transparent and causes only minimal attenuation, even in sensitive high-frequency ranges. Even when used in multiple layers, its impact on sound remains low. For good reason, many renowned speaker manufacturers across Europe and worldwide trust our products.
You too can use our grille fabrics to elegantly cover speakers, sound absorbers, or technical equipment without any loss in sound quality.
Looking for precise, informative measurements? Sound transmission charts are available directly in the product pages of our online shop under the “Features” tab in “Acoustic Measurements”. - The water-repellent Akustikstoff 2.0 from Akustikstoff.com is also excellent for ultrasonic applications.
A research project at the TU Darmstadt demonstrated that ultrasonic signals pass through the fabric almost unhindered – the sound pressure level reduction is only around 1.5 dB.

In these FAQs, you’ll find all information about available fabric widths, cuts, stretch, and processing tolerances.
Frequently asked questions and answers:
- For production reasons, Akustikstoff.com’s speaker cloth cannot be manufactured in wider widths.
If you need to cover larger areas, you can precisely join or sew several panels together. However, it’s often better to use several narrower frames instead of one large panel – the fabric is easier to handle, there’s less risk of uneven tension, and the overall result will look cleaner and more professional.
- Of course, you can order full rolls of speaker cloth from Akustikstoff.com.
The available roll lengths and widths are listed directly in our online shop on each product page. This allows you to choose exactly the quantity you need for your project – from single metres to complete rolls.
