How to clean speaker cloth

At first, you don’t notice it. Then, one day, you realise that your speaker cloth has accumulated a fair amount of grime. Time to restore it to its former, pristine state. But what’s the best way to go about it?

Loose dust is easy enough to vacuum off. But what if an accident leaves an unsightly stain on your speaker grille or AV unit? And what about the effects of constant exposure to cigarette smoke, vaping clouds, kitchen fumes, or similar aerosols? Over time, these create a sticky film on the fabric’s surface—one that not only dulls its colour (those of a certain age may remember how everything in chain-smoking offices developed an unappealing yellow tinge) but also acts like a magnet for dust and dirt, trapping them in place. If you’ve ever tried to clean the top of a kitchen cabinet, you’ll be familiar with this annoying mix of dust and sticky residue.

For situations like these, putting the fabric in the washing machine is often the best solution. If your speaker fabric is attached using our hook fastener, you’re in luck—this is where the design really pays off. You can simply remove the fabric from the frame, wash it, and reattach it once dry. There’s even a short tutorial on YouTube to guide you through the process.

Why hook fastening makes sense
This attachment method is particularly useful if you ever need to clean or swap out your speaker fabric. Instead of wrestling with staples, glue, or fixed panels, you can remove and replace it effortlessly whenever needed.

How to wash acoustic fabric properly
To prevent damage, place the fabric inside a fine-mesh laundry bag, available in most household sections of supermarkets or chemists. Make sure the fabric has enough space to move freely inside the bag. This ensures a thorough clean. Select a delicate wash cycle at a maximum of 40°C and use a low spin setting. Some machines also have dedicated synthetic, functional, or sportswear cycles, which work just as well.

For detergent, a mild delicates wash is ideal. You may also use a liquid detergent designed for sportswear, as it effectively removes any lingering odours. Avoid using standard detergents with bleaching agents—unless, of course, you’re washing white speaker fabric. Fabric softener is also best left out. While it can help reduce static buildup, it may also coat the fibres, leading to further dust accumulation.

Once washed, hang the fabric up to dry as flat as possible. Since it’s made of polyester, it absorbs little moisture and dries quickly—much like technical sportswear. You can gently pull it into shape while damp, but don’t apply too much force. The fabric is naturally wrinkle-resistant, so ironing is rarely necessary. Any minor creases will disappear once the fabric is stretched back onto the frame.

Ironing speaker fabric
If a deeper crease does form—perhaps from being draped over a clothesline—you can carefully iron it out. Use the lowest temperature setting, switch off the steam function, and place a slightly damp cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric. Polyester is highly sensitive to heat, so if you’re not careful, the fabric may melt, stick to the iron, or develop a glossy sheen.

With the right precautions, ironing speaker fabric is possible.

What if the fabric can’t be removed?
If your speaker fabric is glued or stapled in place or if you’re dealing with the original grille fabric on an older speaker, washing it in the machine isn’t an option. If the grille is made of metal or plastic, as was common in many vintage speakers from the ’80s and ’90s, you can try washing the entire front panel under a shower using a mild shampoo or delicate detergent. Dampen the fabric, work the detergent in with a sponge or a very soft brush, leave it for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Allow the panel to dry completely—ideally somewhere with good airflow, but not directly on a radiator or in strong sunlight.

If the frame is made from wood, MDF, or even cardboard (yes, some older speakers came with that), things get trickier. In these cases, you could try spot-cleaning with soapy water, upholstery cleaner, or stain remover from a supermarket. Small stains on an otherwise clean fabric may come out, but there’s always a risk—especially with brightly coloured fabric—that the detergent will cause fading, leaving you with a different kind of stain. Some products can also leave an unsightly dirt rim around the cleaned area.

Avoid abrasive cleaning methods
Despite what some DIY forums suggest, mechanical cleaning methods should be avoided. Using a brush risks pulling threads loose, creating tiny fabric bobbles or even runs in the material. Magic erasers, often recommended for stain removal, are entirely unsuitable—they act like fine sandpaper, visibly damaging delicate or ageing fabric. Worse still, the eraser's residue can embed itself in the fibres, making it nearly impossible to remove.

When it’s better to replace the fabric
In most cases, attempting to clean original fixed speaker fabric isn’t worth the effort. The process is time-consuming, commercial cleaning products can be expensive and ineffective, and more often than not, the end result is worse than what the acoustic cloth looked before. Instead, it’s usually easier to remove the old fabric diligently and replace it with fresh speaker cloth. The time and cost involved are minimal, the result looks far better, and as a bonus, you can modernise the colour or design to better suit your living space.
