Speaker Cloth explained
In acoustics, the term Speaker Cloth usually refers to 2 completely different fabrics or textiles.
1. Sound-absorbing Speaker Cloth
These textiles were developed to free rooms from reverberation and/or to specifically filter out unwanted frequencies. These fabrics are used in recording studios, seminar rooms, offices, homes and event rooms.
2. Sound-permeable (sound-neutral) Speaker Cloth
This type is used in the hi-fi and car hi-fi industry, among others. Many manufacturers of speakers rely on knitted Speaker Cloths, which enable almost 100% sound permeability thanks to the open knitting technique. In the car hi-fi sector, these fabrics are often installed on rear shelves and doorboards to conceal and protect the speakers behind them.
Sound-absorbing panels (sound absorbers) are also often covered with Speaker Cloth to change their appearance without affecting the absorption.
The "real" Speaker Cloth is made of 100% polyester and is also often used to produce complex plastic work in the boot (show car). The Speaker Cloth is pulled over a wooden frame to create a surface that only needs to be finished with polyester resin and GRP mats.
We offer the sound-permeable Speaker Cloth in various colours and dimensions in our shop.
